How Often Should Actors Update Their Headshots?

Headshots and Cold Brews – Scottsdale & Phoenix Actor, Kid, and Business Headshots

Your headshot is often the first thing a casting director sees, so it needs to look like the person who is actually going to walk into the audition room. But how often should actors update their headshots?

There isn't a hard rule that says you need new headshots every year. Instead, it comes down to whether your current photos still accurately represent you and the roles you're going after.

When It's Time for New Actor Headshots

If you've noticeably changed your hair, facial hair, weight, or overall appearance, it's probably time for an update. Casting directors should never be surprised when they meet you after seeing your headshot.

Age matters too, especially for young actors. Kids and teens can change quickly and may need new headshots more frequently than adults.

But appearance isn't the only reason to update your photos. Your headshots should also evolve with your career.

Maybe your original photos worked when you were primarily submitting for college-student roles, but you're now being considered for young professionals. Or perhaps you've been submitting with one general commercial photo and want to start targeting more specific character types.

In those cases, you may not need an entirely different appearance—you need headshots that better communicate where you fit in the industry today.

Do You Need an Entirely New Headshot Session?

Not necessarily.

Take an honest look at your current portfolio. If you have a strong commercial shot but you're missing something more grounded or dramatic, your next session can focus on filling that gap rather than recreating what you already have.

A good actor headshot portfolio should give you enough variety to submit for different roles without making you look like a completely different person in every photo.

At Headshots & Cold Brews, we photograph actors in Scottsdale and work with each person to create headshots that feel natural, current, and specific to their casting range.

If your headshots no longer look like you—or no longer represent the roles you're pursuing—it may be time for an update.
