What to Wear for Actor Headshots
Headshots and Cold Brews – Scottsdale & Phoenix Actor, Kid, and Business Headshots
Wondering what to wear for your actor headshots? The best advice is simple: bring options and don’t overthink it.
At Headshots & Cold Brews, you don’t need to arrive with every look perfectly planned. Dustin helps style your looks from the wardrobe you bring, so having plenty of choices gives us more to work with.
Bring More Than You Think You’ll Need
Bring a variety of colors, necklines, textures, and layers. Tanks, camis, fitted tees, button-downs, sweaters, denim jackets, leather or suede jackets, flannels, vests, and other simple layers can all photograph well.
Come with clothing pressed and on hangers so everything is camera-ready. And skip the shoes—actor headshots are shot from the waist up.
Think About the Type of Headshot
Different wardrobe choices can help create different casting looks without making your headshot feel like a costume.
For commercial headshots, think light, bright, approachable, and fun. Pastels can work especially well.
For theatrical headshots, we often lean toward a grittier look with earth tones and darker colors like olive, navy, and dark brown.
For character headshots, suggest the role rather than dressing as the role. You shouldn't look like you're wearing a costume. Small wardrobe choices can communicate plenty.
Keep Accessories Simple
Accessories shouldn't compete with your face. Small hoops, studs, pearls, and dainty necklaces tend to work well. If you wear glasses, consider bringing frames without lenses to avoid glare from studio lighting.
Most importantly, don't feel like you have to figure everything out yourself.
Bring variety, and we'll help you put together looks that make sense for your casting type and goals. That's part of the process at our Scottsdale studio.
